Text Box: KING’S LYNN
THE UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE
WHAT IT IS

King’s Lynn U3A is a self-financing, self learning organisation for anyone no longer in full time employment. There is a general meeting once a month to which everyone is entitled to be present. It is here that we meet old friends and make new ones in an informal, relaxed atmosphere where business, social and discussion/lecture make up the order of the meeting. It is friendly and convivial and, for many people, it is the focal point of the calendar. Everyone is welcomed and new members quickly find others with similar interests.

HOW TO JOIN

Prospective members, on payment of the nominal entrance fee (for coffee/tea and a biscuit) may attend a maximum of two meetings. After that, they may opt to become members, sign a form and pay an annual subscription (currently £9). Those joining in the last quarter of the year will pay only half the rate for that year.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS

Paid up members may join Special Interest Groups. These groups normally meet, to pursue educational, recreational or social activities in the house of a member. The Special Interest Groups’ Co-ordinator monitors and advises Groups and Group leaders and tries to ensure the smooth running of these within a timetabled framework.  Those attending group meetings are expected to contribute towards the cost of tea and biscuits. Any member given a lift by another member is expected to contribute towards expenses.

The annual subscription and entrance fee are decided by the Committee and approved by the membership.

The Officers include: Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Secretary, Outings Co-ordinator, Speaker Co-ordinator, Tea and Coffee, Equipment Holder, Newsletter Editor, Welfare Secretary, and these, with three other elected members plus one or more o-opted members, comprise the Committee which is responsible to the members for the management and administration of King’s Lynn U3A.

HISTORY OF U3A

It was started in France in 1972 and was then launched in the U.K. ten years later. In France and some other European countries U3A has links with universities (hence the name). In the U.K. we have developed along different lines using the wide variety of skills and experiences of the members themselves. In the main, the informal groups now operating throughout the U.K., are self-sufficient and members enjoy a wide range of activities varying between the academic and practical.

At some of the Regional Days, the skills and expertise of U3A members are wonderfully demonstrated.
